2) the premise that you shouldn't learn japanese if you're only a tourist could be extrapolated to say if you are a tourist anywhere you never have to learn the language. not quite. yes there's signage, and helpful things in tokyo but venture outside of that bubble and things go downhill very quickly.. Fluency. written japanese takes even longer to learn. people who study these things have said that it takes 3 times as long for english-speakers to learn japanese than it does to learn a european language because the grammar and writing systems are so different. in my long experience of learning japanese and living in japan i believe this is true.. While not as crucial as the number of kanji you learn per day, your study time does matter. after you have gotten into the swing of things, you should have a good idea of how many minutes it takes you on average to learn one kanji. you can then figure out how many minutes per day you need to meet your daily kanji goal. take baby steps.
I quit studying japanese completely. this is why you need to do all of your review cards every day. even if you’re in a rut. because as long as you’re still reviewing those cards every day, then you won’t lose the investment that you’ve put into this.. After learning the basics, it's time to get some outside instruction so you can improve your skills. if you are learning japanese for fun because you like japanese culture such as manga and anime or for travel, an audio learning cd might be all you need.. To learn to speak japanese, start by watching japanese movies to give you an idea of how the language sounds and how words are pronounced. next, learn some basics like simple conversational phrases and how to write the numbers 1 through 10..
